Red and white polka dots are pure vintage style shorthand, but it is the back of this cotton dress that makes you look twice. From the front, the high round neckline and sleeveless fitted bodice keep everything beautifully neat. Turn around and a long open panel runs through the back, crossed with five little self-fabric ties before meeting the zip at the waist.

The bodice is shaped beneath the bust and through the waist, then releases into a generously gathered full skirt that falls to the ankle. That contrast between the close-fitting upper half and all that cotton through the skirt gives the dress its wonderful silhouette, with plenty of movement without needing layers underneath.

Try it with cobalt sandals and chunky silver jewellery, or add a cropped cardigan in sunflower yellow with simple white sneakers. For something a little dressier, metallic heels and oversized earrings would work beautifully, while turquoise accessories give the red another direction entirely.

This shape works well if you like definition through the bodice and waist with plenty of room through the hips and thighs. The full gathered skirt gives generous movement, while the open tie-back detail adds interest without changing the clean line from the front.
