The fabric on this jacket is genuinely something. Row after row of horizontal boucle in black, each separated by a looped white thread, and woven through every row a continuous stream of multicoloured silk in blues, teals, pinks, purples, golds, reds, greens so that the overall impression from a distance reads as a rich dark tweed and up close reveals something far more interesting. This looks like fabric someone went to Paris for!

The silhouette is softly structured and relaxed, cut in a slightly longer jacket length with a collarless V-neckline. Four gold rope-twist buttons fasten the front, with three matching buttons at each cuff. Two front pockets sit below the waist, each framed by a decorative rope braid trim along the pocket opening. The back is clean and unlined. Worn over a simple vintage blouse or a silk shirt, trousers or a pencil skirt, this jacket is simply spectacular.

Designer Information: Thornton Hall was founded in Auckland by Isabel Harris and Brian Hall, rebranding from their iconic Hullabaloo boutique in 1979. By the mid-1980s it was one of New Zealand's largest fashion brands, winning four Benson and Hedges Fashion Design Awards in 1982 including the Supreme Award, and later designing uniforms for Air New Zealand. Puritan was acquired by Thornton Hall in the early 1980s and relaunched under Isabel Harris with designer Ches Pritchard. The label's copyright notices on this jacket reflect their landmark 1988 legal action against design copying, which contributed directly to New Zealand's Copyright Act 1994.
