Vintage Clothing - Abstract Stained Glass Floral Rectangle Scarf - Painted Bird Vintage Boutique & The Aviary - Scarf

Abstract Stained Glass Floral Rectangle Scarf

$39.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

Cool blues, violet and dusty rose fracture across this scarf in a stained glass style abstraction, a single oversized bloom rendered in bold geometric planes rather than realistic petals. A soft rose pink border runs the length of the piece, framing the composition with a gentle warmth. Lightweight and as stunning as a painting, it reads more like art in its simplicity.

Knot it loosely at the neck to let the colour planes take centre stage against a plain white or navy top, or fold narrow and wear as a striking hair tie. The cool blues and rose tones work beautifully with denim, grey or soft pastels, and it makes an elegant wrist wrap for an unexpected finishing touch.

A lush garden spills across this silk square, lilies, roses and hydrangea heads rendered in vivid magenta and violet against a soft ivory ground, with palm fronds and trailing bellflowers adding movement to the composition. ABOUT THE DESIGNER: Pierre Cardin spent seven decades reshaping fashion, moving from tailoring apprenticeships in Vichy to becoming one of the great futurists of twentieth century design. Best known for his space age silhouettes of the 1960s, he was equally driven by business instinct, building one of the first true global licensing empires in fashion history. A Pierre Cardin silk scarf carries that same architectural confidence in miniature, bold colour, clean structure and a name that helped define an era.

Vintage Clothing - 1980s Pastel Floral Print Resin Clip-On Earrings - Painted Bird Vintage Boutique & The Aviary - Earrings

1980s Pastel Floral Print Resin Clip-On Earrings

$29.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

Hand illustrated is the word that comes to mind with this pair, a floral print in dusty pink, sage green, lilac and butter yellow, all outlined in a fine dark line that gives the pattern a real graphic, almost fabric-like quality. Set into a simple flat disc, there is nothing fussy about the shape itself, which means the print gets to do all the talking. It is the kind of pattern you would happily find on a silk scarf from the same decade, now living its second life as a proper statement disc for the ear. Easy to wear and full of personality, a lovely option for anyone drawn to colour and pattern over polish and shine.

Quietly opulent, these compact clip-on clusters bring together four faceted crystals in a garden-toned palette of peridot green, citrine yellow, blush pink and soft amethyst, anchored below by a ribbed sapphire-blue drop. Set in polished silver-tone metal, the mixed cuts, round rivoli, pear and marquise, create a faceted, jewel-box sparkle that catches the light from every angle. Vintage Clothing - Abstract Circle Print Silk Bolero Jacket in Violet, Blush and Olive - Painted Bird Vintage Boutique & The Aviary - Coats & Jackets

Abstract Circle Print Silk Bolero Jacket in Violet, Blush and Olive

$129.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

The print on this silk bolero is not one you forget quickly. Layered concentric circles in violet, earthy olive, warm brown and pale blush roll across the fabric with the energy of a mid-century abstract canvas. The silk itself is soft and loved, with a fluid drape that moves easily at the three-quarter sleeve and opens cleanly at the centre front. The reverse is a calm, plain blush silk, giving the silhouette a quiet back view. The cropped, boxy cut falls just at or above the natural waist.

Because the hemline sits high and the silhouette is relaxed across the shoulders and chest, this bolero works particularly well layered over higher-waisted skirts or wide-leg trousers, where it draws the eye upward and gives the upper body visual presence. The open front means you control how it frames your neckline and bust. Those who carry volume at the hip will find the cropped length creates a clean horizontal line that lifts the overall proportion. Pair with a simple black column underneath to let the print anchor the whole look.

Vintage Clothing - Playgirl Exclusive 1960s Berry Boucle Lace-Up Mini Dress - Painted Bird Vintage Boutique & The Aviary - Dresses

Playgirl Exclusive 1960s Berry Boucle Lace-Up Mini Dress

$149.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

The dress texture of this fabric is a dense, nubby boucle weave in deep magenta berry, flecked with darker tones that give the surface a depth and richness you simply do not get from flat cloth. Playgirl Exclusive was a New Zealand label making sharp, youthful pieces for women who were paying attention to what was happening in London, and this mini reflects exactly that: a clean sleeveless A-line cut with a back zip and a lining in the same warm magenta, finished with a detail that sets it apart entirely. A central front panel in soft baby pink linen look fabric runs from the deep V-neckline to the hem, threaded through with a cross-laced pink cord and silver-tipped eyelets. It is a very 1960s idea, executed with real care.

The A-line swings straight from the shoulder without nipping the waist, making this an easy wear across different builds. The open V with its laced panel draws the eye down the centre of the body, creating a long vertical line through the chest and torso. The sleeveless cut keeps things uncluttered at the shoulder. Wear it with summer sandals or a fine skivvy underneath with knee-high boots. The lacing detail is the whole point, so let it show.

Multicolour Faux Pearl Cluster Clip-On Earrings

Each earring presents a sculptural cluster of lustrous faux pearls in deep berry, soft blush, midnight navy, and warm lilac, orbiting a polished gold-tone faux pearl bauble centre. Tiny metallic-toned beads thread between each pearl like a delicate lacework, holding the composition with quiet precision. Compact yet visually abundant, these sit beautifully against the ear. The brass clip backs carry a gentle patina entirely in keeping with their heirloom character.

HISTORY: The word chinoiserie /ʃɪnˈwɑːzəri/ comes from the French term Chinois which translates as Chinese or, after the Chinese taste (as in style). Chinoiseries means a Western or, European interpretation of an Asian style and may not an necessarily be of an actual Asian design. Painted Bird has an array of garments we consider 'chinoiserie' from a number of Asian countries but for purposes of website search - we offer as one collection. We believe they are all beautiful, unique and wearable art for the now. Fashion designers have repeated these designs over a variety of eras. Enjoy!

It is the kind of piece that instantly pulls an outfit together without trying too hard, and it is brilliant for adding warmth and texture to simple layers.

Wear it long and loose over a trench, looped once with a crisp shirt, or tied close at the neck with a knit and tailored trousers. It also looks fantastic draped over the shoulders on cooler evenings. Accessories like this are the secret weapon of a thoughtful wardrobe, because they add personality, colour, and craftsmanship without feeding the fast fashion machine.

There is only one, so if it is calling your name, make it yours today.

Vintage Clothing - Vintage Psychedelic Swirl Wrap-Effect Dress 'VIP' - Painted Bird Vintage Boutique & The Aviary - Dresses

Vintage Psychedelic Swirl Wrap-Effect Dress

$149.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

This is the kind of authentic vintage print that does not whisper. It walks in first. A joyful swirl of seafoam, bubblegum pink, citrus orange and warm mustard in a bold paisley-style pattern that feels like sunshine with a point of view.

The cut has that clever wrap-effect detail through the front, creating an asymmetric line that adds shape without feeling fussy. The neckline sits in a soft boat shape, the sleeves are a wearable three-quarter length, and the overall silhouette is clean and confident. It skims rather than clings, letting the colour do the talking while the tailoring keeps everything feeling intentional.

Styling is the fun part. Keep it graphic with white or tan sandals and a simple clutch, or go full gallery-opening energy with a sharp heel and a sculptural earring. For cooler days, layer with a crisp jacket or a longline coat and let the print peek out like a secret. If you love definition at the waist, add a slim belt over the wrap panel for a polished finish, but it looks just as strong worn as-is.

Vintage Clothing - Green Prism Collar Dress - Painted Bird Vintage Boutique & The Aviary - Dresses

Green Prism Collar Dress

$199.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

This authentic vintage dress has that unmistakable 1970s attitude: a clean, sleek green bodice with an exaggerated pointed collar in a vivid geometric print, then a matching printed skirt that brings the movement. The collar length and shape are a big clue to the era, and the neat front button placket adds to that tailored, daytime to dinner polish that seventies dressing did so well.

Construction wise, the silhouette is built through shaping seams and a defined join where the skirt is set in, giving structure up top and an easy swish below. The crisp collar suggests interfacing for that sharp line, and the colour matched buttons keep the look intentional rather than fussy.

Let the collar be your jewellery and keep the neckline clear, then choose a simple sandal for day or a heeled mule for evening. If you are a bit fuller on your bottom half than your top half, the bold collar visually balances the look beautifully, while the skirt does its job with confidence and ease.

You wont find another with this sensational swish!

Vintage Japanese Haori
This is the most common style of kimono jacket. With kimono style sleeves made to fit over the kimono sleeve it covers, a collar piece that extends from hem to hem, an open front with a haori himo tie (obi are not used), and typically made from fabric that would also be suitable for a kimono. There are many categories of haori, defined by fabric, occasion, design and length. The natsu haori, is made in a semi-sheer synthetic or open weave silk to be worn in the summertime. Many haori have a surprise inside the lining that might be colourful unique or decorative than the outer fabric of the jacket. Most haori are reversible, with all the stitching hidden, so if you prefer the lining side, display or wear it inside out!

DESIGNER INFORMATION: With a bold spirit and a sharp eye for individuality, Isabel Haworth carved her place in New Zealand’s boutique fashion history when she opened Hadny 5 in 1964. Swapping mass production for one-off artistry, Isabel's silk dresses and hand-finished pieces offered wearers something rare: total exclusivity. Originally from Te Awamutu, she trained in Sydney before returning to New Zealand to pursue her own vision in creating striking, handcrafted garments from her lively Swanson Street boutique. With a flair for the romantic and an instinct for originality, Isabel’s work defined a new era of fashion for independent, style-conscious women of the 1960s and beyond.
