Vintage Japanese Haori

This is the most common style of kimono jacket. With kimono style sleeves made to fit over the kimono sleeve it covers, a collar piece that extends from hem to hem, an open front with a haori himo tie (obi are not used), and typically made from fabric that would also be suitable for a kimono. There are many categories of haori, defined by fabric, occasion, design and length. The natsu haori, is made in a semi-sheer synthetic or open weave silk to be worn in the summertime. Many haori have a surprise inside the lining that might be colourful unique or decorative than the outer fabric of the jacket. Most haori are reversible, with all the stitching hidden, so if you prefer the lining side, display or wear it inside out!

Vintage Japanese Haori

This scarlet maxi dress moves in a single unbroken sweep, cut from an easy care fabric that keeps its shape through wear. The bodice is built from a series of chevron seams, each one meeting at a sharp point down the centre front and again at the low V of the back, framing the neckline rather than filling it. Long sleeves taper smoothly to the wrist keeping the line clean from shoulder to cuff. Below the waist, the skirt opens into a full circle, held closed at the back by a concealed zip, so the fabric has room to fall and swing rather than sit flat.

This burnt red or orange dress has a beautifully fluid finish with the softly weave of vintage, a clean V neckline and extended cap sleeves that give just enough coverage while keeping the upper line light.

The shape is beautifully straightforward: gently fitted through the bodice, drawn in at the waist with elasticated gathering at the rear, then released into a long skirt that falls almost to the floor. There is plenty of movement through the lower half without layers, pleats or extra fuss, which lets the colour and fluidity of the cut shine.

Try it with metallic sandals and statement or bohemian style oversized earrings for an evening event, or bring in a little neutral contrast with moss heels and a small brown bag. A cropped jacket would sharpen it for cooler weather, while turquoise jewellery or a printed silk scarf could take it somewhere a little less expected.

This shape works well if you like definition at the waist with more room through the hips and thighs. The V neckline also gives a clean open line through the upper body, while the softly extended shoulder helps balance proportions without adding bulk.
