This dark grey leather skirt from Hide, made by Macalisters Apparel in Christchurch, has the clean, elegant lines that makes a good leather skirt so useful. The leather is supple with a soft sheen rather than a glossy finish, and the narrow waistband keeps the line neat before the skirt falls straight through the hip to around knee length.

The tailoring is simple and beautifully balanced, with shaping through the waist and hips, a centre-back zip and a rear walking split giving enough movement without changing the straight silhouette. It is fully lined, and the original care and maker labels are still present, including the Christchurch manufacturing label.

Grey leather gives you plenty of room to play with texture and colour. Try it with an ivory blouse, a chunky knit with red pumps, or a T Shirt and ne of our unique vintage patterned scarves. Houndstooth never really leaves. It cycles in and out of the fashion conversation but the fabric itself that tight, precise, black and white check stays forever useful decade after decade. This midi skirt, made in New Zealand from a wool and easy care blend, wears the pattern at a classic scale: small enough to read as a refined all-over texture at a distance, clear and graphic up close. The cloth has a lovely weight and substance to it.

The silhouette is a clean pencil line, sitting from a neat waistband through the hip and falling to a midi length with a centre back vent for ease of movement. Fine black and silver stripes run through both pieces, with plain silver lurex used at the high collar, waistband and cuffs. The top sits close through the body, long sleeves softly easing in to cuffs, and a zip running the length of the centre back. Below it the skirt opens into an A-line and falls all the way to the ankle. Worn together the two make one long unbroken column. Milady Styles made this set in New Zealand, and half a century on both pieces are still together.

Two pieces means two ways to wear it. The top goes well with almost any denim pairing or simple skirt when you want a little shine on an ordinary day, and the skirt carries a simple knit just as easily. A low heel or a long boot flatters the skirt length. Or wear the whole thing as it was made and go somewhere where you can make an entrance.

This One Step Ahead skirt takes a charcoal grey wool blend and scatters it with little flashes of red, cobalt, yellow, turquoise and pink. From a distance it is a beautiful grey skirt, then the coloured flecks start appearing and suddenly there are a dozen different directions your styling could take.

This Gizelle skirt takes grey well beyond plain. The wool-blend weave is mottled through charcoal and softer grey, with tiny neps of rust, blue, yellow and red scattered through the fabric. The high waistband gives it a defined starting point, while sofy pleats shape the upper skirt before opening into a generous midi-length sweep.

That controlled pleating is what gives the skirt such a good line. It sits neatly through the waist and upper hip, then gradually releases into fullness rather than gathering directly beneath the waistband. Classic is the label stitched into the lining, and it's a fitting name for a piece built around such an enduring shape. The wool is a fine mid-grey with a soft brushed hand, tailored through the bodice with a shawl collar that folds back cleanly at the neckline. Six buttons run down the front, finish with a slim black belt at the waist, and the skirt below falls into fine, even knife pleats from hip to hem. The open split from waist to hem is perfect for pairing with cigarillo trousers or a straight skirt.

The sleeves are set long with a turned-back cuff, and the whole silhouette sings of coat and dress in one, structured through the shoulder and waist before releasing into all that pleating below.
