Filigree jewellery is a craft with a very long history, and pieces like this are a reminder of why it has never entirely disappeared. Nine open-work flower motifs, each built from fine twisted wire in a layered dimensional form, are linked by slim bar connectors along a fine rope chain. The flowers themselves have real depth. The petals open outward in a scalloped ring around a raised centre cluster, the whole thing more three-dimensional than the photos quite capture. A beautifully simple Lalique heart, this Amoureuse Beaucoup pendant is formed in smoky grey glass with a softly rounded, sculptural surface and a deep heart silhouette. The grey has enough translucency to show the depth of the glass without losing that wonderfully moody charcoal tone, while the polished gold-tone bail gives it a neat flash of contrast.

It hangs from its original-style black twisted silk cord, giving the pendant plenty of length and allowing the glass heart to sit as the focal point. There is something particularly good about jewellery that does not need fussing with, and this works just as well against a crisp white shirt as it does over a fine knit, a silk blouse or the neckline of a favourite dress.
