History: The word chinoiserie /ʃɪnˈwɑːzəri/ comes from the French term Chinois which translates as Chinese or, after the Chinese taste (as in style). Chinoiseries means a Western or, European interpretation of an Asian style and may not an necessarily be of an actual Asian design. Painted Bird has an array of garments we consider 'chinoiserie' from a number of Asian countries but for purposes of website search - we offer as one collection. We believe they are all beautiful, unique and wearable art for the now. Fashion designers have repeated these designs over a variety of eras. Enjoy!

1970s Colin Glascoe Stained Glass Print Shirt Dress

1970s Colin Glascoe Stained Glass Print Shirt Dress

$129.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

This dress is printed in a stained glass style mosaic of purple, green, yellow and white, with each panel framed in fine linework like leaded glass. A pointed collar sits open at the front placket and a patch pocket sits at the chest on one side. Mid-length sleeves finish in a turned cuff, and a self-fabric tie belt bejewelled with green faux crystals at the end of each cinches the dress gently at the waist. The dress falls in a straight line to just below the knee. That bold mosaic print, framed in linework, is a familiar marker of the psychedelic prints of the late 1960s and 1970s.

Love an easy, straight silhouette with definition through the tie belt? Wear this one with flat sandals and simple hoops for daytime ease, or add a blazer for something more directional.

Sue Brett became particularly well known for its juniors fashion from the 1950s through the 1970s, with the company later expanding into additional womenswear lines. Chevron Stripe 1970s Wool Full Skirt

$129.00 $89.00 Save $40.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

There is warmth in this wool skirt, its chevron stripes moving between camel, chocolate and cream in a diagonal pattern that shifts direction at the centre front and back. The waistband sits high and fastens with a single button and zip while the body gathers generously below for a soft, swishing fullness through the hem. The wool has a brushed, slightly fuzzy hand that holds warmth well, and the chevron stripes are cut to align cleanly at the centre seams for a considered finish.

This skirt sits at the natural waist and releases into a full, floating panelled silhouette that skims over the hip and moves freely through the leg, offering plenty of room. The high contrast stripe pattern draws the eye outward and adds visual interest through movement. Pair with a fitted knit or blouse tucked in to let the fullness of the skirt take centre stage.

Enjoy!

Ankara *WAX PRINT Wikipedia: Wax prints are a type of nonverbal communication among African women, and thereby carry their messages out into the world. Some wax prints are named after personalities, cities, buildings, sayings, or occasions. The producer, name of the product, and registration number of the design is printed on the selvage, thus protecting the design and attesting to the quality of the fabric. Wax fabrics constitute capital goods for African women. They are therefore often retained based on their perceived market value - as is true vintage clothing!

Vintage Style Red & White Polka Dot Cotton Tie Back Dress

Vintage Style Red & White Polka Dot Cotton Tie Back Dress

$89.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

Red and white polka dots are pure vintage style shorthand, but it is the back of this cotton dress that makes you look twice. From the front, the high round neckline and sleeveless fitted bodice keep everything beautifully neat. Turn around and a long open panel runs through the back, crossed with five little self-fabric ties before meeting the zip at the waist.

The bodice is shaped beneath the bust and through the waist, then releases into a generously gathered full skirt that falls to the ankle. That contrast between the close-fitting upper half and all that cotton through the skirt gives the dress its wonderful silhouette, with plenty of movement without needing layers underneath.

Try it with cobalt sandals and chunky silver jewellery, or add a cropped cardigan in sunflower yellow with simple white sneakers. For something a little dressier, metallic heels and oversized earrings would work beautifully, while turquoise accessories give the red another direction entirely.

This shape works well if you like definition through the bodice and waist with plenty of room through the hips and thighs. The full gathered skirt gives generous movement, while the open tie-back detail adds interest without changing the clean line from the front.

Berkhan Pink Jacquard Cowl Neck Vintage Blouse

Berkhan Pink Jacquard Cowl Neck Vintage Blouse

$99.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

This Berkhan blouse has a lovely soft rose-pink colour with a woven abstract jacquard pattern that shifts gently as the light moves across it. The generous cowl neckline is the standout detail, falling in soft folds across the front and giving the blouse plenty of texture without needing any extra trim.

The sleeveless shape is cut with room through the body rather than close to the waist, while the back yoke releases into light gathering for an easy drape. Worn loose, it has a relaxed line over trousers or a skirt, or you can tuck and blouse it slightly at the waist to change the proportion.

Try it with deep chocolate trousers and metallic loafers, or pair it with an emerald skirt. For something brighter, add cobalt or raspberry accessories, while denim keeps the jacquard and neckline firmly in focus.

This shape works well if you like a little room through the bust, waist and hips without losing shape at the shoulders. The cowl neckline creates softness around the upper body, while the straight cut gives an easy skim through the middle.

Apricot 1980s Chevron Knit Jumper

$119.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

This jumper is knitted in a soft apricot with a fine zigzag texture running the full width of the body, each row catching your eye as the yarn shifts between stitches. The neckline sits in a wide, gentle scoop finished with a neat ribbed trim, echoed by a matching ribbed band at the hem. The sleeves are generously cut at the shoulder, narrowing gradually to a ribbed cuff at the forearm, giving the piece a relaxed, draped shape rather than a fitted one. Pulled on rather than fastened, it keeps its shape through the ribbing at the hem and cuffs.

The relaxed shoulder and wide sleeve give plenty of room through the upper arm, so if you prefer a looser fit through the top half, this jumper offers that ease. The ribbed hem sits gently at the waist without pulling in, and the scoop neckline works well both with a single long necklace or just as simply left plain. Pair it with a straight skirt or tailored trousers for a simple daytime look, or wear it over a collared shirt with the cuffs showing beneath the sleeve. The ribbing at the cuffs and hem keeps the shape after wear.

Cream and Golden Floral 1970s Vintage Maxi Dress

Cream and Golden Floral 1970s Vintage Maxi Dress

$169.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

This fabulousness in floral print sweeps golden yellow flowers, soft sage and seafoam green foliage scattering across a warm cream background. The placement changes as it travels down the dress, so the larger blooms have plenty of space around them rather than forming one continuous all-over pattern.

The bodice has a softly open V neckline, finished with a short row of fabric-covered buttons and curved shaping beneath the bust. From there the dress falls into a long, fluid skirt with an easy line through the waist and hips. The long sleeves have gentle fullness before finishing in wide cuffs with covered button detailing, while the centre-back zip keeps the overall shape neat.

Try it with moss green sandals and amber jewellery, or bring out the cooler tones of the foliage with turquoise earrings and a soft teal bag. A cropped cardigan in paprika or embrace boho with a shawl when another layer is needed. Leather accessories add a more relaxed direction.

This shape works well if you like an A-line style definition around the upper body followed by more room through the waist and hips. The V neckline opens the line through the chest, while the long skirt gives plenty of movement through the lower half.

Teal 1980s Vertical Stripe Belted Shirt Dress

Teal 1980s Vertical Stripe Belted Shirt Dress

$149.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

This shirt dress is patterned in fine vertical stripes running through green, teal, white and touches of orange and yellow, each stripe angling neatly across the seams at the shoulder and cuff. A pointed collar sits above a button front finished with fabric covered buttons, and the sleeves gather softly into the shoulder before easing towards the elbow. A self fabric belt with a matching buckle sits at the waist, cinching the fuller skirt below. The dress is sold with a teal slip cut simply with a V neckline trimmed in fine lace and a matching lace edge at the hem, giving the sheer outer layer its shape and colour.

The belted waist gives definition through the middle, and the collar and button front keep the neckline simple and open. The sleeve sits softly at the shoulder with room through the upper arm, easing towards a neat elbow length. Worn together, the slip provides the colour and the shirt dress the pattern, though the slip can also be worn on its own as a simple dress. Or wear your own slip (or, the dress over trousers) in another colour to extend your wardrobe options! The fuller skirt moves easily when walking and sitting.

Vintage Cotton Floral Belted Shirt Dress

Vintage Cotton Floral Belted Shirt Dress

$129.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

This floral print has that wonderfully busy little garden look that works so well on a shirt dress, with violet, dusty pink and turquoise flowers scattered across a pale background. The colours are closely packed without losing their individual detail, and the crisp collar gives the print a little structure around the face.

The button-through front is framed by a neat notched collar and a small chest pocket, while the wide short sleeves give plenty of room through the upper arm. A matching fabric belt draws the shape in at the waist, finished with a white buckle that picks up the pale background of the print. Below, the skirt falls in a straightforward knee-length line.

Try it with violet sandals and a turquoise bag, or pull out the pink with raspberry flats and simple jewellery. For something more relaxed, leave the belt a touch looser and add white sneakers with a denim jacket. A cardigan in emerald or coral would bring another strong colour into the mix without competing with the smaller floral pattern.

This shape works well if you like the option of defining the waist while retaining room through the bust, hips and upper arms. The open collar gives a longer line through the neckline, while the matching belt allows you to adjust the amount of shape through the middle rather than relying on a closely fitted cut.

Gainsborough Paisley Vintage Hostess Maxi Dress

Gainsborough Paisley Vintage Hostess Maxi Dress

$189.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

There is so much going on in this Gainsborough maxi, but the colour palette keeps it beautifully cohesive. Rust, chocolate, charcoal, silvery grey and soft pink wind through a large-scale paisley print, with a fine metallic sheen running across the fabric. The softly draped cowl neckline gives the print somewhere to fold and gather rather than sitting completely flat across the upper body.

The bodice follows the body through the waist before releasing into a long, gently A-line skirt. Full-length sleeves are softly gathered into narrow cuffs, each finished with two small gold-tone buttons, while the concealed centre-back zip keeps the back line neat.

Try it with deep red or oxblood boots and smoky quartz jewellery, or pick up the softer parts of the print with dusty pink heels and a pewter bag. This shape works well if you like definition through the bodice with more room as the skirt falls away from the hips. The cowl neckline creates softness around the chest, while the long uninterrupted skirt gives a clean line through the lower body. The full sleeves also add balance through the shoulders.

Seen as early as the 17th century, the exotic and decorative style 'Chinoiseries' is repeated in architecture, furnishings and fashion alike. Popular with, and worn by, those who value the unique garment with flair! The Art Deco eras are awash with chinoiserie garments similar to this formidable piece!

This is a beautiful albeit 'wounded' example of craftmanship, delicate quality fabric and enduring fashion. At least 30 years young, we included this in our collection due to the unusual colour and artwork. While it may need care, this jacket or robe remains is a stylish 'head turner'.

Bring an 'edgy' look to jeans and t-shirt or, over a slimline dress or skirt combination. Wear with wide leg trousers to emulate the Deco eras. Or, simply wear around the house for a bit of vintage decadence. Wear it your way - be your own bird.

Enjoy!

Vintage Clothing - Floral Patterened Shift In Green - Painted Bird Vintage Boutique & The Aviary - Dresses

Authentic Vintage Khaki Green Red Floral Print Shift Dress

$129.00 $109.00 Save $20.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

Bold red florals, loosely painted in style, scattered across a ground of deep khaki, olive and black. It reads almost like a work on canvas, the kind of print that stops people in their tracks and prompts the question every vintage lover knows well: where did you get that?

The dress itself is a clean, tailored shift. Sleeveless, with a scooped neckline and a neat back zip closure. The silhouette is straight through the body with a gentle ease at the hip, hitting at the knee. The fabric is a cotton blend with a fine woven texture that gives the print real depth and richness. Fully lined throughout in a coordinating floral lining that is a lovely detail in itself. Wear it as it is with a low heel and a simple jewellery for lunch or wedding. Add a fitted black blazer and you have an evening. Pair it with a tan leather belt cinched at the waist and tan sandals for summer. The print works beautifully with black accessories, olive green, warm tan or a bold red shoe if you want to pick up the florals directly.

The shift silhouette suits a straight or gently curved figure and works well on petite to mid frames given the proportions of the cut.

Enjoy!
