Silk printed with overscale daisies in deep violet, soft periwinkle, cream and touches of sage green, this dress carries the particular vitality of mid-century textile design. The flowers are not delicate or demure: their petals are rendered with bold, almost graphic brushstroke energy, filling the fabric edge to edge with a print that feels as alive now as it did the day it was made. The construction is classically of its era, a shirt-style bodice with an open notch collar, full-length sleeves with deep turn-back cuffs secured by fabric-covered buttons, and a generous gathered skirt falling to below the knee. This highly collectable dress is made with a genuinely special fabric in a deep berry shifting through rose and plum in diagonal sweeps, as though watercolour was pulled across the cloth before the roses were placed. And then the roses themselves: loose, blooms in powder blue, ice grey and white with vivid green foliage, scattered across the skirt and bodice with just the right amount of  breathing room between each one. The Palm Island Fashions label places this firmly in the 1950s, a registered Australian label with a good regional following. The fabric is soft and loved in a light cotton that moves beautifully.
