Vintage Clothing - Holland & Holland 1970s Steel Grey Calfskin Leather Shirt Jacket - Painted Bird Vintage Boutique & The Aviary - Coats & Jackets

Holland & Holland 1970s Steel Grey Calfskin Leather Shirt Jacket

$499.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

An uncommonly found luxury offering! This calfskin leather Holland & Holland shirt jacket, made in Great Britain and lined in Bemberg rayon, is exactly the kind of quality and craftmanship they have been know for since 1835. The leather is cool steel grey, fine-grained and smooth, with a weight and drape closer to a beautifully cut shirt than to a conventional jacket.

The shirt collar sits flat and clean at the neckline. Buttons run down the front, the cuffs close with a single button, and a neat pointed tab vent sits at each hip. The back is seamed at centre. There is nothing here that does not belong. Worn over a fine knit or a silk blouse, tucked into tailored trousers or a simple skirt, this jacket goes with almost everything and makes all of it just look that much ... better.

Puritan by Thornton Hall Multicolour 1980s Boucle Silk Jacket

$249.00

The fabric on this jacket is genuinely something. Row after row of horizontal boucle in black, each separated by a looped white thread, and woven through every row a continuous stream of multicoloured silk in blues, teals, pinks, purples, golds, reds, greens so that the overall impression from a distance reads as a rich dark tweed and up close reveals something far more interesting. This looks like fabric someone went to Paris for!

The silhouette is softly structured and relaxed, cut in a slightly longer jacket length with a collarless V-neckline. Four gold rope-twist buttons fasten the front, with three matching buttons at each cuff. Two front pockets sit below the waist, each framed by a decorative rope braid trim along the pocket opening. The back is clean and unlined. Worn over a simple vintage blouse or a silk shirt, trousers or a pencil skirt, this jacket is simply spectacular.

Vintage Clothing - 1970s Anne Armstrong Steel Grey Leather Trench Coat - Painted Bird Vintage Boutique & The Aviary - Coats & Jackets

1970s Anne Armstrong Steel Grey Leather Trench Coat

$229.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

Grey leather has its own vibe. Not like black, which can be such an easy go to. Not brown, which is the warmer tone of a staple black. No, grey sits perfectly somewhere in the elevated city chic and slightly slightly moody colouring space. This double-breasted leather trench, cut to the knee in a cool steel grey, has the broad pointed collar and relaxed A-line ease that place it firmly in the 70s, when leather outerwear was at the height of its relevance and tailors were cutting it like cloth.

The construction is careful throughout. Topstitching runs the full length of the front panels, down the back seams and along the back yoke. The self-tie leather belt draws the waist at the back. Two large dome-style buttons fasten the double-breasted front, with two more below the waist, and each long sleeve finishes at a buttoned cuff with three small buttons. Front pockets sit at the hip. The centre back has a deep vent for ease of movement. Inside, the lining carries the in gold script: Anne Armstrong. This is truly a coat that has been kept, loved and treasured well.

Vintage Clothing - Metallic Thread Fit and Flare 1950s Party Dress - Painted Bird Vintage Boutique & The Aviary - Dresses

Metallic Thread Fit and Flare 1950s Party Dress

$210.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

Look closely at this one and the fabric gives up its secret: fine metallic threads run through the charcoal weave in soft flashes of green, gold and pink, catching the light differently with every small movement. The bodice sits close through the waist with a V neckline front and back, cap sleeves, and a fitted midriff that releases into a full, soft skirt. A concealed zip runs up the centre back to a hook and eye at the nape.

The fit is fitted through the bodice and nipped at the waist, with the skirt providing all the movement and drama below. It's a dress built for occasions where the light offers a talking point, whether that's candlelight or an evening under string lights.

Wear it with simple heels and a swipe of red lipstick for a classic take, or bring in deep emerald or silver accessories to pick out the metallic flecks running through the weave.

Thien Dung 1990s Silver Satin Áo Dài-Style Ensemble

$210.00

Silver satin can so easily go full mirrorball, but this Thien Dung ensemble takes the sharper road. The long tunic and trouser pairing follows the Vietnamese áo dài silhouette, with a stand collar, diagonal side fastening, long sleeves, deep side splits and matching satin trousers beneath.

The colour sits somewhere between dove and silver moonlight, which makes it a stunning statement. Style it for event dressing with sculptural earrings, a lacquer-red lip, or a small cobalt clutch if you like a clean colour clash.

A striking piece of authentic vintage clothing edging to jsut before the fast fashion era, with the kind of cultural dress reference and construction detail that makes true vintage curation so rewarding.

Vintage Clothing - Minquilla Faux Fur Swing Coat - Painted Bird Vintage Boutique & The Aviary - Coats & Jackets

Minquilla Faux Fur Swing Coat

$199.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

Minquilla was a fur fabric trademark produced by Sisters, and this coat carries the label still stitched into the lining. The faux fur itself is a deep charcoal grey with lighter tipping through the pile, giving real depth and movement to the surface. A generous shawl collar sits soft against the neckline, and the coat closes with three buttons down the front, with turned-back cuffs finishing each sleeve.

The silhouette is a loose, swing-style cut that skims rather than fits, falling in a clean line from the shoulder to well below the knee. This is a coat built for warmth and presence in equal measure.

Wear it open over a simple knit and trousers for daytime ease, or belted over a slip dress for evening. A deep plum or forest green underneath makes the most of the grey, while cream or soft blush keeps things lighter.

Vintage Clothing - Grey Floral Strapless Full Skirt Dress - Painted Bird Vintage Boutique & The Aviary - Dresses

Grey Floral Strapless Full Skirt Dress

$189.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

This grey strapless dress has that wonderful party shape that makes you understand why earlier cocktail dresses still turn heads. The skirt opens out from the waist with plenty of volume and a softly rounded almost puff skirt style hem finish. The interesting floral line pattern sits across the grey background rather than over it, which gives the whole dress a lovely silvery, evening-ready feel without needing sparkle.

Wear it with pewter heels (have you seen our Metallic Pewter Leather Pumps), a silver mesh bag and a little black cardigan when you want a classic evening line, or make it a little more edgy with raspberry lipstick and a cropped denim jacket. It is a brilliant dress for anyone who likes their occasion wear pretty, practical and just a bit old-movie without needing to arrive in a limousine.

Vintage Clothing - 1950s Wool Shawl Collar Coat Dress with Pleated Skirt - Painted Bird Vintage Boutique & The Aviary - Dresses

1950s Wool Shawl Collar Coat Dress with Pleated Skirt

$189.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

Classic is the label stitched into the lining, and it's a fitting name for a piece built around such an enduring shape. The wool is a fine mid-grey with a soft brushed hand, tailored through the bodice with a shawl collar that folds back cleanly at the neckline. Six buttons run down the front, finish with a slim black belt at the waist, and the skirt below falls into fine, even knife pleats from hip to hem. The open split from waist to hem is perfect for pairing with cigarillo trousers or a straight skirt.

The sleeves are set long with a turned-back cuff, and the whole silhouette sings of coat and dress in one, structured through the shoulder and waist before releasing into all that pleating below.

Wear it as is with simple black flats and a leather tote for the office, or add a soft silk scarf and statement jewels to take it into evening. A cream beret and matching gloves lean further into the era if that's the mood.

Vintage Clothing - Black, Pewter and Gold Beaded Evening Bag and Belt Set - Painted Bird Vintage Boutique & The Aviary - Handbag

Black, Pewter and Gold Beaded Evening Bag and Belt Set

$149.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

A fan of long feather style leaves spreads across the front of this evening bag, worked in black, pewter and pale gold beads, then repeats at the centre front of the matching belt. The fanned motif borrows from earlier deco lines, a look that came round again through the 80s. The bag takes a rounded pouch shape with a shaped top edge and hangs from a twisted cord strap. The belt is wide and contoured through the middle. Every outer surface is beaded right to the edges, with no plain ground left showing.

Wear the two together with a long column dress in garnet or deep teal. A pointed satin flat or a low heel will flatter the pairing better than anything with its own shine. They work apart just as well: the bag with tailored trousers and a silk shirt, the belt at the waist of a fine knit dress.

Vintage Clothing - Hide by Macalisters Christchurch Black Leather Pencil Skirt - Painted Bird Vintage Boutique & The Aviary - Skirt

Hide by Macalisters Christchurch Black Leather Pencil Skirt

$149.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

This dark grey leather skirt from Hide, made by Macalisters Apparel in Christchurch, has the clean, elegant lines that makes a good leather skirt so useful. The leather is supple with a soft sheen rather than a glossy finish, and the narrow waistband keeps the line neat before the skirt falls straight through the hip to around knee length.

The tailoring is simple and beautifully balanced, with shaping through the waist and hips, a centre-back zip and a rear walking split giving enough movement without changing the straight silhouette. It is fully lined, and the original care and maker labels are still present, including the Christchurch manufacturing label.

Grey leather gives you plenty of room to play with texture and colour. Try it with an ivory blouse, a chunky knit with red pumps, or a T Shirt and ne of our unique vintage patterned scarves. This shape works particularly well if you like a defined waist with a soft yet straight line from hip to thigh.

Mid Century Satin Jacquard Wiggle Dress with Butterfly Motif

$189.00 $149.00 Save $40.00

The grounding background on this one is a soft taupe satin with a dusty pink blossom spray and pale blue butterflies woven right through, the kind of detail you only catch if you are truly lookng. The neckline dips into a wide V both front and back, and the bodice is fitted through the waist before the skirt releases into large darts that resemble soft pleating that carries a bit of ease just below the waist through the hip. Three-quarter sleeves and a side zip keep the whole thing svelte.

This dress is fitted enough through the middle to hold its shape, with just enough movement in the straight skirt to make sitting down and standing up equally comfortable.

Pair it with silver, pink or baby blue heels and a soft rose lip for something that leans into the era properly, or bring it forward a few decades with Doc Martin style boots and a biker jacket. A pewter clutch and drop earrings finish it for evening.

Vintage Clothing - 1970s Evans Floral Pleated Two-Piece Dress and Jacket - Painted Bird Vintage Boutique & The Aviary - Dresses

1970s Evans Floral Pleated Two-Piece Dress and Jacket

$149.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

A two-piece scroll-stopper from UK label, Evans. The fabric is soft and slightly textured, almost lace-like under the light, printed all over with a scattered floral in dusty lavender, peach and soft plum. A ruffled stand collar finishes the neckline on the dress, fastening with a single button at the throat, and the pleating through skirt gives real movement when you walk. The jacket discreet pleating set is set off by the simple soft fabric at the bust to waist. This set will be what you wear to a Sunday lunch and quietly outdress everyone.

Wear the dress alone with the belt cinched and a pair of dove grey boots for something soft and pulled together, or add the jacket over the top for an occasion moment. Try it with amethyst tights and a sage green clutch for a colour story that leans into the print rather than away from it, or ground the whole thing with terracotta accessories if you want warmth against all that lavender. Either way, the collar and the pleats do plenty of the work on their own.

Vintage Clothing - Pine Original Fashion 1970s Finnish Lavender Floral Midi Dress - Painted Bird Vintage Boutique & The Aviary - Dresses

Pine Original Fashion 1970s Finnish Lavender Floral Midi Dress

$149.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

Layers of lavender, violet and grey swirl into a bold abstract floral across this Pine dress, a print with the sweeping, energy that Nordic fashion houses embraced during the 1970s. Cut from a lightweight synthetic knit prized for its drape and colourfastness, the fabric moves easily with the body. Long sleeves taper into buttoned cuffs, while the scoop neckline gathers softly into a contrast piped trim. A defined, elasticated waistband gives way to a full, swinging skirt, finished with a neat centre back zip.

The elasticated waist offers ease through the middle while still marking your shape. Raglan sleeves soften the shoulder line and sit close at the wrist, balancing the fuller skirt below. Wear it loose with boots for daytime ease, or lift it with heels and jewellery for evening. The gathered neckline draws the eye upward and flatters a fuller or more petite bust alike, offering coverage without restriction. A striking, wearable piece of Scandinavian design history.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER: Pine Original Fashion was a Finnish label producing through the 1970s, with a flowing script logo typical of European branding from the era. Its swirling, high contrast florals echo the bold Italian print movement of the decade, filtered through a distinctly Nordic hand. The soft gathering at the neckline reflects the attentive garment making Scandinavian houses were known for at the time.

Vintage Clothing - Eastex Charcoal 1960s Wool Beaded Shift Dress - Painted Bird Vintage Boutique & The Aviary - Dresses

Eastex Charcoal 1960s Wool Beaded Shift Dress

$149.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

This charcoal Eastex shift was tailored from a wool blend in a New Zealand workroom. The fabric falls with weight, holding a clean line from the square neckline through to the knee. At the collarbone, a narrow band of diamond quilting catches tiny beads, the only ornament on an otherwise unbroken silhouette. The shoulders are set with a soft dropped seam, easing into three quarter sleeves that taper to just above the wrist. A fitted waist gives way to a straight skirt, released at the back by a single kick pleat.

The fitted waist and straight skirt bring definition through the middle, so if you like a dress that follows your natural shape without clinging, this is one for you. The dropped shoulder gives easy room through the upper arm, and the three quarter sleeve pairs well layered under a coat or worn alone. Add knee high boots and simple jewellery for the office, or heels and a wool coat for evening. The kick pleat lets you walk and sit freely.

The fit is close through the bodice with the belt marking the waist clearly, while the pleated skirt gives real movement and ease through the hip and hem. A great layering piece it's a dress that works equally well worn for the office or dressed down for an afternoon out.

Pair it with a soft contrast blouse underneath and easy loafers or, blaze in to a weekend with touches of red in a lip and heels.

DESIGNER INFORMATION: As represented in the collection of Auckland War Memorial Museum, Sue Brett was an American ready-to-wear label founded by Jack Baker. Baker established his own company in 1946 and renamed it Sue Brett in 1947, creating the name as a playful reinvention of the French word “soubrette”, meaning a lady’s maid or flirtatious female. Sue Brett became particularly well known for its juniors fashion from the 1950s through the 1970s, with the company later expanding into additional womenswear lines. More information about the label can be found via the Vintage Fashion Guild.

Vintage Clothing - Brown Grey Rabbit Fur Leather Vest 'VIP' - Painted Bird Vintage Boutique & The Aviary - Vest

Brown Grey Rabbit Fur Leather Vest

$129.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

This Susu Paris vest brings together rabbit fur, leather and satin in a cropped shape with plenty of texture. The fur has a natural mix of brown, grey, cream and darker tones, with leather trim through the front and collar buckle detail. A front zip gives it a clean centre line, while the ribbed hem band keeps the fit close at the waist. It has that late 70s to 90s outerwear feel that sits somewhere between ski lodge, rock wardrobe and “yes, I absolutely meant to wear this to brunch.”

Wear it over a fine black knit and high-waisted trousers, or take it softer with an ivory blouse, wide-leg denim and ankle boots. The cropped shape works especially well with higher waists, and the sleeveless cut makes it useful for layering without adding bulk through the arms. Add silver jewellery and a red lip if you enjoy a bit of texture and contrast with your polish.

Vintage Clothing - Grey Blue Burgundy Abstract Floral Cowl Neck Dress - Painted Bird Vintage Boutique & The Aviary - Dresses

Grey Blue Burgundy Abstract Floral Cowl Neck Dress

$129.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

Whoever designed this print understood that florals work best when they are both decorative and expressive. Rendered in slate blue, deep burgundy, dusty rose, taupe and ivory on a background that shifts between all of them, the large-scale blooms are loosely drawn in the manner of an oil sketch. The fabric offers a fine texture and a gentle drape.

The silhouette is soft and easy. A cowl neckline pools just below the collarbone, the waist gathers in on a fine elasticated band, and a full skirt falls to just below the knee. Blouson three-quarter sleeves finish at a straight cuff. The cowl neckline and full skirt silhouette with elasticated waist are a flattering style for most silhouettes. Try a slim tan or caramel belt, or wear it simply as it is with a low wedge or Mary Jane flat.

Up close the grey tweed weave is scattered with tiny flecks of pink, yellow, blue and green, so what reads as plain grey from a distance turns out to have colour running all through it. The cloth is substantial enough to hold the shape of the skirt as you move.

Those flecks give you plenty to work with. A rainbow of colour in this discreet grey skirt. Your choice of pairing will easily picking up the colour already in the weave. A low boot or long boot flatters the skirt length.

Vintage Clothing - Frenz by Sally Small Black Grey White 1980s Houndstooth Skirt - Painted Bird Vintage Boutique & The Aviary - Skirts

Frenz by Sally Small Black Grey White 1980s Houndstooth Skirt

$129.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

Houndstooth never really leaves. It cycles in and out of the fashion conversation but the fabric itself that tight, precise, black and white check stays forever useful decade after decade. This midi skirt, made in New Zealand from a wool and easy care blend, wears the pattern at a classic scale: small enough to read as a refined all-over texture at a distance, clear and graphic up close. The cloth has a lovely weight and substance to it.

The silhouette is a clean pencil line, sitting from a neat waistband through the hip and falling to a midi length with a centre back vent for ease of movement. Slanted front pockets sit at the hip thankfully ... genuinely useable. The rear waist is elasticated for comfort, with a single black button at centre back above the concealed zip. Goes well with a tucked white shirt, a ribbed knit, or a leather jacket for a sharper edge. A low boot or long boot flatters the length.

Vintage Clothing - Puritan Grey Shirtdress with Fuchsia Ribbon Print - Painted Bird Vintage Boutique & The Aviary - Dresses

Puritan Grey Shirtdress with Fuchsia Ribbon Print

$129.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

This Puritan shirtdress is cut from soft grey easy care fabric with an almost hand drawn look fuchsia ribbon print winding loose across the fabric. The bodice gathers at the shoulders into a blouson shape and cinches at the waist with a matching self tie belt, while the skirt below falls into fine, crisp pleats. A sharp point collar and pearlised buttons run the full length of the placket.

It dates from the era of the fluid silhouette, built to move easily from office to evening without a change of clothes. Belt it at the natural waist and let the pleats carry the movement on their own. Dusty plum tights and smoky heels take it into evening, or a blush pink cardigan and gold hoop earrings soften it for daytime. A dove grey suede bag keeps the palette tonal without pulling focus from the ribbon print.

Multicolour Stripe Peplum Dress

$149.00 $129.00 Save $20.00

Vertical stripes in plum, dusty pink, ochre and soft grey run the full length of this dress, evenly spaced and unbroken from shoulder to hem. The neckline is a simple round crew, with elbow-length sleeves gathered into a soft puff at the shoulder and finished with an elasticated cuff. An elasticated waistband sits at the natural waist and releases into a peplum flounce, with the stripe pattern continuing straight through the skirt below.

Pair it with a dusty rose cardigan and cream flats for daytime, or bring the plum tone forward with a burgundy heel and simple gold hoops for evening. The elasticated waist and peplum do the shaping here, so there's no need to overdress around it.

Vintage Clothing - Vintage Pierre Cardin Silk Rectangle Scarf - Painted Bird Vintage Boutique & The Aviary - Scarf

Vintage Pierre Cardin Silk Rectangle Scarf

$129.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

Diagonal stripes have a way of making a scarf feel like it's already in motion, and this one leans hard into that energy. Bands of dusty lavender, powder blue, blush and khaki race across the silk on the bias, edged in cream, the whole thing like a rainbow filtered through a soft-focus 1970s lens. Tie it in a bow at the throat, as pictured, and the stripes fan out like petals, proof this piece was designed for exactly that kind of quiet drama.

Let it do double duty as a headscarf knotted at the nape, a long bow at the neck for a French-girl finish, or simply tied at the waist of a plain top. The palette is soft enough to sit against nearly anything neutral, but for something more stand out try it against a deep plum or a warm rust, colours pulled straight from the stripe itself.

Circa: 1940–1970
Origin: Private Collection - Stylist's Own
Label: Pierre Cardin, Paris

Fabric: Silk
Condition: Excellent, commensurate with age and love
Care: Cool hand wash or dry clean

Size: OSFM
Measurement: Rectangle (Med)
Features: Hand-rolled hem throughout and a diagonal multi-stripe design that sets it apart from the more common Cardin logo scarves, with the signature block-printed in the corner.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER
Pierre Cardin trained under Christian Dior before opening his own house in Paris in 1950, quickly becoming known for a bold, geometric approach that favoured sculptural shape over the female form. Through the 1960s and 70s he led the Space Age movement in fashion alongside Courrèges and Paco Rabanne, and expanded relentlessly into furniture, homewares and accessories under his instantly recognisable name. His scarves carry that same appetite for pattern and colour play, cementing him as one of the most collected French design names of the era.
