Black, Pewter and Gold Beaded Evening Bag and Belt Set

Black, Pewter and Gold Beaded Evening Bag and Belt Set

$149.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

A fan of long feather style leaves spreads across the front of this evening bag, worked in black, pewter and pale gold beads, then repeats at the centre front of the matching belt. The fanned motif borrows from earlier deco lines, a look that came round again through the 80s. The bag takes a rounded pouch shape with a shaped top edge and hangs from a twisted cord strap. The belt is wide and contoured through the middle. Every outer surface is beaded right to the edges, with no plain ground left showing.

Wear the two together with a long column dress in garnet or deep teal. A pointed satin flat or a low heel will flatter the pairing better than anything with its own shine. They work apart just as well: the bag with tailored trousers and a silk shirt, the belt at the waist of a fine knit dress.

Puritan by Thornton Hall Multicolour 1980s Boucle Silk Jacket

Puritan by Thornton Hall Multicolour 1980s Boucle Silk Jacket

$249.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

The fabric on this jacket is genuinely something. Row after row of horizontal boucle in black, each separated by a looped white thread, and woven through every row a continuous stream of multicoloured silk in blues, teals, pinks, purples, golds, reds, greens so that the overall impression from a distance reads as a rich dark tweed and up close reveals something far more interesting. This looks like fabric someone went to Paris for!

The silhouette is softly structured and relaxed, cut in a slightly longer jacket length with a collarless V-neckline. Four gold rope-twist buttons fasten the front, with three matching buttons at each cuff. Two front pockets sit below the waist, each framed by a decorative rope braid trim along the pocket opening. The back is clean and unlined. Worn over a simple vintage blouse or a silk shirt, trousers or a pencil skirt, this jacket is simply spectacular.

Designer Information: Thornton Hall was founded in Auckland by Isabel Harris and Brian Hall, rebranding from their iconic Hullabaloo boutique in 1979. By the mid-1980s it was one of New Zealand's largest fashion brands, winning four Benson and Hedges Fashion Design Awards in 1982 including the Supreme Award, and later designing uniforms for Air New Zealand. Puritan was acquired by Thornton Hall in the early 1980s and relaunched under Isabel Harris with designer Ches Pritchard. Frenz by Sally Small Black Grey White 1980s Houndstooth Skirt

Frenz by Sally Small Black Grey White 1980s Houndstooth Skirt

$129.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

Houndstooth never really leaves. It cycles in and out of the fashion conversation but the fabric itself that tight, precise, black and white check stays forever useful decade after decade. This midi skirt, made in New Zealand from a wool and easy care blend, wears the pattern at a classic scale: small enough to read as a refined all-over texture at a distance, clear and graphic up close. The cloth has a lovely weight and substance to it.

The silhouette is a clean pencil line, sitting from a neat waistband through the hip and falling to a midi length with a centre back vent for ease of movement. Slanted front pockets sit at the hip thankfully ... genuinely useable. The rear waist is elasticated for comfort, with a single black button at centre back above the concealed zip. Goes well with a tucked white shirt, a ribbed knit, or a leather jacket for a sharper edge. A low boot or long boot flatters the length.

Jean for Joseph Le Bon Silver Sequin Silk 1980s Evening Jacket

Jean for Joseph Le Bon Silver Sequin Silk 1980s Evening Jacket

$349.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

The sequin work on this jacket is not decoration. It is the entire statement. Thousands of silver sequins and faceted crystal-effect beads are hand-sewn across 100% pure silk in a sweeping arabesque pattern, the black background disappearing almost entirely beneath the weight of the embellishment. Up close, the variation is visible: flat black sequins building the dark forms, bright silver-tone beads tracing the scrolling lines between them with a glittering precision that photographs simply cannot do justice to.

The silhouette is relaxed and easy! A straight, unstructured cut with long sleeves and a round neckline finished with a narrow beaded trim, sitting hip-length with a gentle A-line ease from shoulder to hem. The front opens on a concealed zip. The pure silk lining carries the same quality commitment as the shell. This is a piece that understood exactly what it was made for: an entrance.

Designer Information: Jean for Joseph Le Bon was a Paris, Hong Kong, and New York eveningwear label, known for its hand-embellished pure silk jackets produced in India during the 1980s and into the 1990s. The label operated across three fashion capitals simultaneously, targeting the international occasion-wear market. Pieces turn up in collector circles and at auction, where the combination of 100% silk construction and hand-applied sequin and bead work distinguishes them from the mass-produced eveningwear of the same era.

Milady Styles 1970s Black and Silver Lurex Stripe Knit Maxi Skirt Set

Milady Styles 1970s Black and Silver Lurex Stripe Knit Maxi Skirt Set

$229.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

Fine black and silver stripes run through both pieces, with plain silver lurex used at the high collar, waistband and cuffs. The top sits close through the body, long sleeves softly easing in to cuffs, and a zip running the length of the centre back. Below it the skirt opens into an A-line and falls all the way to the ankle. Worn together the two make one long unbroken column. Milady Styles made this set in New Zealand, and half a century on both pieces are still together.

Two pieces means two ways to wear it. The top goes well with almost any denim pairing or simple skirt when you want a little shine on an ordinary day, and the skirt carries a simple knit just as easily. A low heel or a long boot flatters the skirt length. Or wear the whole thing as it was made and go somewhere where you can make an entrance.

Vintage Leonard Paris Tamango Silk Scarf

Vintage Leonard Paris Tamango Silk Scarf

$89.00 $79.00 Save $10.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

Two faces, one flower. Fold this square over and the same orchid blooms twice, once against a soft charcoal ground, once swallowed into black, as though the design itself couldn't decide between shadow and dawn. That's Leonard Paris all over, a house that never met an orchid it didn't want to paint in six different lights. The petals unfurl in dusty mauve and violet, outlined in cream, the sort of print that looks equally at home around your neck or knotted onto a handbag handle.

Wear it as Leonard intended, loose and full at the neck so the sheer nature of the colourways catches the eye, or fold it into a narrow band for the hair where the orchid becomes a single graphic burst. It sits beautifully against black, obviously, but try it with a bold emerald or violet. Simple is equally savvy paired with a white or cream blouse to allow the stunning print to carry the look.

Circa: 1940–1970
Origin: Private Collection
Label: Tamango, Leonard Paris

Fabric: Silk
Condition: Very good, commensurate with age and love. Small area of concern as shown
Care: Cool hand wash or dry clean

Size: OSFM
Measurement: Square (Sm)
Features: The fine, sheer weight of the silk and the hand-rolled hem are signatures of the house's early scarf production, and the "Tamango" signature woven into the corner is a detail collectors watch for.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER
Founded in Paris in 1958 by Jacques Leonard, the house made its name under designer Daniel Tribouillard, whose love of flowers, the orchid above all, became its defining signature. That orchid motif carried the label from dresses and jersey separates into silk scarves through the early 1970s, dressing women from Paris to New York and earning shelf space at Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue. It remains the house emblem today, prized for its free, unstructured form. A Leonard Paris scarf carries a genuine piece of that heritage, hand-finished and unmistakably French.

Belvera Fashions Sydney Mid Century Black Tulle Party Dress

$229.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

Layered luminescent tiers of black tulle drift over a soft powder blue taffeta lining, creating a beautifully theatrical silhouette characteristic of mid century occasion dressing. Styled by Belvera Fashions Sydney, this authentic vintage piece balances delicacy with structure through softly gathered skirts, ruched bodice detailing, and sheer illusion panelling across the neckline. The embroidered floral dot motif catches the light with scattered iridescent sparkle, while the voluminous puff sleeves reveal subtle tulle undersleeves beneath. Floating yet sculptural, the dress moves with remarkable softness while retaining the elegant shape so synonymous with formal dressing of the era.

The fitted bodice creates gentle structure through the waist before opening into a full layered skirt that allows movement and balance through the hip area. The soft bateau neckline and sheer upper bodice frame the shoulders beautifully, while the gathered sleeve construction adds softness without overwhelming the silhouette. Ideal for evening events, winter celebrations, or modern occasion dressing, this piece pairs effortlessly with satin heels, delicate jewellery, or a structured coat. Or emulate a 80s/90s look and try a denim jacket and Doc Martin boots! The rear metal zip closure keeps the line clean and traditionally tailored.

Teal lurex up top like sea-glass catching the light, then a long sweep of black velvet that falls straight and elegant to the floor. It has that classic eventwear confidence, the kind you pull on when the night needs a little drama.

Vintage Clothing - Midnight Tapestry Fine Wool Vintage Scarf 'VIP' - Painted Bird Vintage Boutique & The Aviary - Scarf

Midnight Tapestry Fine Wool Vintage Scarf

$69.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

This fine wool scarf has a deep black base that sets off a tapestry-like border of jewel tones, teal, purple, copper and ember-red, with tiny motifs that read like miniature tiles. It feels like something you would find folded inside a beautifully kept coat pocket, ready for a dramatic entrance, or at least a very good coffee.

Wrap it once and let the border do the talking, or fold it into a band and tie it close to the neck with a camel coat for clean contrast. It also looks brilliant with denim and a neutral knit when you want colour that feels perfectly finished. A wool vintage scarf is the kind of wardrobe workhorse that makes winter dressing feel smarter without adding bulk.

Vintage Clothing - 1950s Black and Emerald Sheer Stripe Fit and Flare Skirt 'VIP' - Painted Bird Vintage Boutique & The Aviary - Skirts

1950s Black and Emerald Sheer Stripe Fit and Flare Skirt

$149.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

This is the kind of 1950s skirt that does the hard work for you. A true fit and flare shape with a full, swishy sweep, finished in a black sheer overlay with deep green horizontal striping that reads dressy without trying too hard.

The fabric has a crisp, lightly structured feel through the overlay, so the skirt holds its silhouette rather than collapsing. Wearable and polished, the sheer striped layer adds depth and movement as you walk. Up top, it sits high on the waist with soft gathers for volume, plus a matching belt to define the waistline cleanly.

It is a brilliant piece for proportion play. The high waist and full skirt create that classic 1950s balance, highlighting the waist and giving the hips and legs room to move. Pair it with a fitted knit, a tucked blouse, or a simple tee and a sharp shoe. It also loves a cropped jacket, especially for evenings when you want shape without bulk.

Elegant, wearable, and quietly theatrical in the best way.

Vintage Clothing - Emerald Chinoiserie Silk Wadding Reversible Padded Jacket 'VIP' - Painted Bird Vintage Boutique & The Aviary - Coats & Jackets

Emerald Chinoiserie Silk Wadding Reversible Padded Jacket

$189.00

Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

This is the kind of piece that makes an outfit feel instantly intentional. A deep emerald green, lightly lustrous jacket with a traditional mandarin collar and classic knotted frog closures, finished with embroidered chrysanthemum blooms scattered like fireworks across a night garden.

The structure is wonderfully wearable. It has a clean, straight silhouette with enough ease through the body to layer over a fine knit or a crisp shirt. The padded quilting gives you that satisfying feel of warmth without being too bulky, and the black reversible interior means you can flip the mood entirely when you want something more understated.

The embroidery is the star. White, gold, and coppery tones pop against the green satin-like surface, and the texture play between smooth sheen and quilted stitching is pure vintage craftsmanship. It looks elevated with tailored trousers and loafers, and equally cool with denim and a simple tee.

This is a statement jacket that still behaves like a practical one. It is comfort, detail, and story in one wearable layer.

HISTORY: The word chinoiserie /ʃɪnˈwɑːzəri/ comes from the French term Chinois which translates as Chinese or, after the Chinese taste (as in style). Chinoiserie means a Western or, European interpretation of an Asian style and may not an necessarily be of an actual Asian design. Painted Bird has an array of garments we consider 'chinoiserie' from a number of Asian countries but for purposes of website search - we offer as one collection. We believe they are all beautiful, unique and wearable art for the now. Fashion designers have repeated these designs over a variety of eras. Enjoy!
