Clothing

You see the collar first. Wide, white, squared across the back and falling rounded at the front, each one finished with a cloth patch of an embroidered navy anchor and a red lifebuoy. Under it the cotton is a warm mid grey, buttoned the full length of the front with small gilt centred buttons, and the short sleeves carry double white ribbon banding at the cuff. A self-fabric belt runs through loops at the waist and fastens with a scalloped gold tone buckle, and the shorts below fall in soft pleats.

Follow the nautical thread or ignore it completely. Add fun white leather sneakers and keep this an easy look. Flat sandals or espadrilles put another twist on this cute jumpsuit. One piece, one decision, and you are dressed.

This grey strapless dress has that wonderful party shape that makes you understand why earlier cocktail dresses still turn heads. The skirt opens out from the waist with plenty of volume and a softly rounded almost puff skirt style hem finish. The interesting floral line pattern sits across the grey background rather than over it, which gives the whole dress a lovely silvery, evening-ready feel without needing sparkle.

Wear it with pewter heels (have you seen our Metallic Pewter Leather Pumps), a silver mesh bag and a little black cardigan when you want a classic evening line, or make it a little more edgy with raspberry lipstick and a cropped denim jacket. It is a brilliant dress for anyone who likes their occasion wear pretty, practical and just a bit old-movie without needing to arrive in a limousine.

Whoever designed this print understood that florals work best when they are both decorative and expressive. Rendered in slate blue, deep burgundy, dusty rose, taupe and ivory on a background that shifts between all of them, the large-scale blooms are loosely drawn in the manner of an oil sketch. The fabric offers a fine texture and a gentle drape.

The silhouette is soft and easy. A cowl neckline pools just below the collarbone, the waist gathers in on a fine elasticated band, and a full skirt falls to just below the knee. Blouson three-quarter sleeves finish at a straight cuff. The cowl neckline and full skirt silhouette with elasticated waist are a flattering style for most silhouettes. Try a slim tan or caramel belt, or wear it simply as it is with a low wedge or Mary Jane flat.

This silk jacket has all the graphic satisfaction you could need. The grey and black vertical lines run cleanly through the body, then shift direction across the long sleeves and pockets, giving the whole piece that pleasing 80s to 90s optical play we all secretly still love. The black stitched collar sharpens the neckline, while the two covered front buttons keep the finish neat.

Wear it over a slim black column dress when you want the jacket to be your statement piece, or bring it into everyday rotation with charcoal denim, a pewter camisole and silver jewellery. This jacket will blance out a smaller top half bringing a bold sttructure. Wear belted or open to give options. A stripe this good also loves colour nearby, so try raspberry lipstick, teal earrings or a citron scarf tucked just so.

The fabric on this jacket is genuinely something. Row after row of horizontal boucle in black, each separated by a looped white thread, and woven through every row a continuous stream of multicoloured silk in blues, teals, pinks, purples, golds, reds, greens so that the overall impression from a distance reads as a rich dark tweed and up close reveals something far more interesting. This looks like fabric someone went to Paris for!

The silhouette is softly structured and relaxed, cut in a slightly longer jacket length with a collarless V-neckline. Four gold rope-twist buttons fasten the front, with three matching buttons at each cuff. Two front pockets sit below the waist, each framed by a decorative rope braid trim along the pocket opening. The back is clean and unlined. Worn over a simple vintage blouse or a silk shirt, trousers or a pencil skirt, this jacket is simply spectacular.

Grey leather has its own vibe. Not like black, which can be such an easy go to. Not brown, which is the warmer tone of a staple black. No, grey sits perfectly somewhere in the elevated city chic and slightly slightly moody colouring space. This double-breasted leather trench, cut to the knee in a cool steel grey, has the broad pointed collar and relaxed A-line ease that place it firmly in the 70s, when leather outerwear was at the height of its relevance and tailors were cutting it like cloth.

The construction is careful throughout. Topstitching runs the full length of the front panels, down the back seams and along the back yoke. The self-tie leather belt draws the waist at the back. Two large dome-style buttons fasten the double-breasted front, with two more below the waist, and each long sleeve finishes at a buttoned cuff with three small buttons. Front pockets sit at the hip. The centre back has a deep vent for ease of movement. Inside, the lining carries the in gold script: Anne Armstrong. This is truly a coat that has been kept, loved and treasured well.

This One Step Ahead skirt takes a charcoal grey wool blend and scatters it with little flashes of red, cobalt, yellow, turquoise and pink. From a distance it is a beautiful grey skirt, then the coloured flecks start appearing and suddenly there are a dozen different directions your styling could take.

It sits neatly at the waist before opening into a wonderfully full midi shape with plenty of fabric through the skirt. There is no unnecessary bulk around the waistband, just a clean fitted top and a generous sweep below, which gives it lovely movement when worn.

Try a cobalt knit with red loafers or a daffodil yellow blouse. This shape works particularly well if you like a defined waist with plenty of room through the hips and thighs. The fullness begins below the waistband, giving the skirt a fluid movement.

This Gizelle skirt takes grey well beyond plain. The wool-blend weave is mottled through charcoal and softer grey, with tiny neps of rust, blue, yellow and red scattered through the fabric. The high waistband gives it a defined starting point, while sofy pleats shape the upper skirt before opening into a generous midi-length sweep.

That controlled pleating is what gives the skirt such a good line. It sits neatly through the waist and upper hip, then gradually releases into fullness rather than gathering directly beneath the waistband. The result is a classic fuller silhouette with plenty of movement, finished with a side zip and buttoned waistband.

Grey makes a brilliant base for pulling colour into the rest of an outfit. Try raspberry knitwear with oxblood loafers, cobalt with mustard, or a teal blouse with rust accessories. You could also pick up one of the tiny flecks in the weave with a patterned blouse, striped knit or bright cardigan tucked into the waist.

This shape works particularly well if you enjoy a defined waist with more freedom through the hips and thighs. The soft pleats give structure around the upper skirt before releasing into the fuller hem, so there is shape without relying on the waistband.

An A-line cut that sits at the natural waist and moves out cleanly to the knee, with soft pleats releasing from the waistband to give it shape. Up close the grey tweed weave is scattered with tiny flecks of pink, yellow, blue and green, so what reads as plain grey from a distance turns out to have colour running all through it. The cloth is substantial enough to hold the shape of the skirt as you move.

Those flecks give you plenty to work with. A rainbow of colour in this discreet grey skirt. Your choice of pairing will easily picking up the colour already in the weave. A low boot or long boot flatters the skirt length.

Silver satin with a high shine, cut generously through the body so the fabric moves rather than lying flat. The collar comes to a clean point and the front buttons up to the collar stand in pale pearl look buttons. Sleeves run full to the wrist and gather into a single button cuff. Across the back a yoke seam releases into a centre inverted pleat, which is where the ease through the shoulders comes from, and the hem curves gently at the sides.

Wear it tucked into a straight skirt as shown here, or leave it loose over something slim for a longer line. The shine does plenty on its own, so you can either keep the rest quiet with mnimalist jewels and footwear or, go nuts with oversized statement pieces that will tone down he shine. A black blazer over the top sharpens the whole thing. If you like a shirt you can move in, this one gives you plenty of room.

Irregular blocks of pewter and pale silver travel across this knit in a giraffe print that changes direction as it moves around the body. The pattern is knitted in rather than printed, worked in a fine lurex blend so the whole surface carries a low metallic glint. A ribbed stand neckline in plain silver sits above it, long sleeves run clean to the wrist, and the body finishes at the hip.

Love a knit with a bit of glimmer? It tucks into a full skirt as shown here, and works just as well with something narrow and dark below. Keep jewellery in pewter or silver tones so the metallic stays one idea rather than two. A tailored jacket or leather pairing takes it into evening, or flat boots and denim keep it easy.

A herringbone style scratch print runs diagonally across this dress in charcoal and cream, broken by a mosaic tile print panel that runs the full length of the front bodice and repeats at the cuffs and hem. The neckline ties into a soft bow at the front, and the dress fastens with a concealed zip at the centre back. Shoulders are gently gathered into the yoke, with long sleeves finishing in button cuffs. The soft fabric and chevron print combined with the neckline are serious nods to the typical of dressing through the 1970s, when this kind of textured, graphic print was everywhere.

If you like a dress with soft definition through the shoulders and room to move below, this one will suit you well. Wear it with knee boots and tights for a polished look, or flats and a blazer to elevate a daily office look. Keep accessories vertical accentuating the centrepiece in pale rose or silver.

Charcoal and grey diagonal stripes run the full length of this dress, cut with a soft sheen that plays off the fabric's woven texture. A stand collar closes with a single button at the front, and the sleeves gather into cuffed wrists with a matching button. The waist is elasticated with a fabric tie at each side seam, easing into a full gathered skirt below. The gathered shoulders and elasticated waist are typical of the comfort of 80s fashion - dressing easy through the body rather than fitted.

Wear it with metallic sandals for an evening look. Try flats or boots and a plain cardigan for daytime or workwear. The diagonal stripe print pairs easily with plain black or silver accessories.

Soft dove grey faux suede gives this Giere Volcana Karner two-piece suit a beautifully clean finish, with the matching jacket and skirt creating one long line when worn together. The jacket has a neat stand collar, gently structured shoulders and a relaxed body that can be drawn in with the matching self tie belt. Turn-back cuffs, angled welt pockets and tonal buttons keep the detailing beautifully simple.

The coordinating skirt sits neatly at the waist before falling into a long, gently A-line shape, with discreet side pockets and a smooth waistband. Worn together, the proportions are rather fabulous, with the shorter belted jacket sitting neatly over the longer skirt. Both pieces work separately too, which gives you plenty of options without losing what makes the original suit so good.

Try the full suit with a raspberry or cobalt knit underneath and ankle boots, or add a striped top in cream and cherry red for a more relaxed combination. Wear the jacket with dark denim and a turquoise scarf, then give the skirt a different direction with a tucked-in silk blouse in emerald, plum or paprika.

This shape works well if you like the option of defining the waist without needing a closely fitted jacket. The belt lets you adjust the shape through the middle, while the longer skirt gives room through the hips and thighs. Worn open, the jacket creates a straighter line through the body, so you can change the proportion depending on what you are wearing underneath.

This El Jay jacket has exactly the sort of understated 1970s tailoring that works beautifully with a modern wardrobe. The soft grey ultrasuede has a slightly mauve cast, with a fine suede-like nap that gives the colour depth. A wide notched collar frames the neckline, while the four-button front and long straight body keep the shape wonderfully unfussy.

There is plenty of good construction to look at once you get closer. Curved seam detailing runs from the shoulder towards the chest, a horizontal back yoke gives structure across the shoulders, and two generous patch pockets sit low at the front. The sleeves are cut straight with broad cuff bands and small side splits, giving the jacket its distinctive relaxed finish.

Try it with burgundy trousers and a pale pink knit, or wear it over a turquoise shirt with dark denim and loafers. For something a little brighter, add a mustard scarf and cherry red bag. This shape works well if you like a jacket that falls straight from the shoulders rather than pulling in at the waist. There is room through the bust, waist and hips for layering, while the collar and shoulder seams give the upper body enough structure to stop the relaxed cut feeling oversized.

The dropped waist and gathered fullness are typical of the loosened, easy silhouettes this French label became known for through the 2000s.

This blouse keeps things simple, a soft grey through and through with a fine texture that feels like silk and catches the light without ever being showy. The collar sits close with rounded points, buttoning through to a gathered yoke at the shoulder that gives a little ease across the back. Long sleeves finish in a neat button cuff.

Wear this buttoned to the collar for a polished look, or open at the neck with the sleeves pushed up for something more relaxed. If you like ease across the back and shoulders rather than anything fitted, this blouse may suit you well. Tuck into trousers or a skirt for the office, or wear loose over denim for the weekend.

This blouse is a lovely example of silk, with a scattered dandelion style floral woven through in ivory and black against a soft grey ground. The stand collar ties into a soft bow at the front, sitting above a row of buttons that runs the full length of the placket. The shoulders gather next to softly padded shoudler detail into long sleeves, finished with a neat button cuff at the wrist. Made under the Michele Valery label from Paris, this piece has the kind of easy tailoring that glances past the 1970s in to the 80s.

Tuck this into high waisted trousers or a pencil skirt and let the bow sit as the focal point, no extra jewellery needed at the neckline. Add a blazer over the top for the office or wear it with wise flowing cream silk trousers for an elegant easy chic in the evening.

This dress carries one of those soft watercolour florals that feels almost  painted rather than printed, roses in blush pink and lilac drifting across a grey ground. The neckline gathers into a self-fabric tie at the front, the cape sleeves flutter loose from the shoulder, and the waist is elasticated at the back with a long matching sash that wraps and ties for shaping. Below the waist the skirt falls into a tiered, ruffled hem that gives movement as you walk. Made in New Zealand under the Young Sophisticates label by T.G. Southwell and Co, a well known Auckland fashion house through the mid to late twentieth century, this dress carries a romantic flowing silhouette.

Let the sash do the shaping and keep the rest simple, drop earrings or nothing at all, the print carries plenty on its own. If you like softness rather than structure through the waist, the wrap tie here lets you adjust the fit to what feels right on the day. Sandals or low heels both work, depending on whether you're headed somewhere relaxed or a little dressier.

Southwell labels were sold through department stores across New Zealand, including Milne and Choyce.

This dress is a lovely example of jacquard stripe, alternating bands of soft silver grey and ivory that catch the light differently depending on the angle, giving real depth rather than a flat print effect. A wide ivory yoke frames the round neckline, the sleeves gather into neat button cuffs, and the back closes with a single button at a keyhole opening. An elasticated waist sits under a self fabric belt, drawing in before the skirt falls in soft gathers to a midi length. The dropped yoke and gathered sleeve head are classic 1980s details.

Let the stripe carry the look and keep styling simple, swap out for a metallic belt and hoops for daytime. Pair with block heels or flat sandals depending on the occasion and let the fabric's soft shimmer do the rest.

Sheer ivory net forms the base of this blouse, embroidered throughout in silver lurex thread with a scrolling floral motif and finished with scattered sequins for a soft shimmer. Small faceted crystal style buttons run the full length of the front, and the hem, neckline and cuffs are all finished with a delicate scalloped trim. The V neckline sits gently at the collarbone, and three-quarter sleeves flare softly at the wrist. The scalloped edging and low V neckline echo the eveningwear popular through the 1990s.

Layer it over a slip or fitted cami in ivory or blush to keep the lace visible, and pair with tailored trousers or a straight skirt for evening. It is easy to dress up with simple or statement jewellery and a low bun, or worn with denim and boots for a lower key look that still lets the embroidery show.

Cut on the bias in a soft silver grey with a subtle sheen, this dress should skim rather than cling, falling in one unbroken line from a delicate double-spaghetti strap bodice to a floor-sweeping hem. The V-front neckline is simple and low, letting the fabric and the fall of the skirt carry the whole look.

Wear it exactly as is for evening, or dress it down with a fitted blazer and heels for something unexpected. A slim belt at the waist adds definition if you want it, though the bias cut does that job on its own.

There's a certain kind of coat that can either turn getting dressed into an event or, a warm hug. And this one does exactly that. The silver grey pile is thick and plush with generous depth and movement rather than a single flat tone. It falls to a mid-length with slightly dropped shoulders and full sleeves.

Layer it over anything from a simple black dress to jeans and a jumper for instant drama. A collarless neckline keeps things clean at the throat, so it also sits beautifully with a polo neck or a statement scarf tucked in close.

The wool on this Wyndham, New Zealand made skirt is a deep charcoal with a fine diagonal stripe running through in cream, rust and grey, and the skirt is fully pleated from waist to hem, giving it real swing and structure. A single button and zipper at the side fasten the waistband at the front.

The pleating holds its shape well and the stripe catches the eye differently depending on which pleat falls forward, giving the whole piece quiet movement.

Pair it with a soft cream knit and brown leather boots for an easy autumn look, or bring in mustard or a stark white to draw out the fine stripes running through the wool.

A Talbots charcoal grey wool with a soft brushed feel is cool weather perfection. The neckline sits in a deep V front and back, sleeveless through the shoulder, with a fitted bodice that meets a slim self-belt at the natural waist and pockets to boot! Below the belt the skirt releases into soft pleating at the front, falling in a fuller line through the body. A centre back zip closes the dress from nape to waist.

The fit is close through the bodice with the belt marking the waist clearly, while the pleated skirt gives real movement and ease through the hip and hem. A great layering piece it's a dress that works equally well worn for the office or dressed down for an afternoon out.

Pair it with a soft contrast blouse underneath and easy loafers or, blaze in to a weekend with touches of red in a lip and heels.

Look closely at this one and the fabric gives up its secret: fine metallic threads run through the charcoal weave in soft flashes of green, gold and pink, catching the light differently with every small movement. The bodice sits close through the waist with a V neckline front and back, cap sleeves, and a fitted midriff that releases into a full, soft skirt. A concealed zip runs up the centre back to a hook and eye at the nape.

The fit is fitted through the bodice and nipped at the waist, with the skirt providing all the movement and drama below. It's a dress built for occasions where the light offers a talking point, whether that's candlelight or an evening under string lights.

Wear it with simple heels and a swipe of red lipstick for a classic take, or bring in deep emerald or silver accessories to pick out the metallic flecks running through the weave.

Minquilla was a fur fabric trademark produced by Sisters, and this coat carries the label still stitched into the lining. The faux fur itself is a deep charcoal grey with lighter tipping through the pile, giving real depth and movement to the surface. A generous shawl collar sits soft against the neckline, and the coat closes with three buttons down the front, with turned-back cuffs finishing each sleeve.

The silhouette is a loose, swing-style cut that skims rather than fits, falling in a clean line from the shoulder to well below the knee. This is a coat built for warmth and presence in equal measure.

Wear it open over a simple knit and trousers for daytime ease, or belted over a slip dress for evening. A deep plum or forest green underneath makes the most of the grey, while cream or soft blush keeps things lighter.

Vertical stripes in plum, dusty pink, ochre and soft grey run the full length of this dress, evenly spaced and unbroken from shoulder to hem. The neckline is a simple round crew, with elbow-length sleeves gathered into a soft puff at the shoulder and finished with an elasticated cuff. An elasticated waistband sits at the natural waist and releases into a peplum flounce, with the stripe pattern continuing straight through the skirt below.

Pair it with a dusty rose cardigan and cream flats for daytime, or bring the plum tone forward with a burgundy heel and simple gold hoops for evening. The elasticated waist and peplum do the shaping here, so there's no need to overdress around it.

The grounding background on this one is a soft taupe satin with a dusty pink blossom spray and pale blue butterflies woven right through, the kind of detail you only catch if you are truly lookng. The neckline dips into a wide V both front and back, and the bodice is fitted through the waist before the skirt releases into large darts that resemble soft pleating that carries a bit of ease just below the waist through the hip. Three-quarter sleeves and a side zip keep the whole thing svelte.

This dress is fitted enough through the middle to hold its shape, with just enough movement in the straight skirt to make sitting down and standing up equally comfortable.

Pair it with silver, pink or baby blue heels and a soft rose lip for something that leans into the era properly, or bring it forward a few decades with Doc Martin style boots and a biker jacket. A pewter clutch and drop earrings finish it for evening.

A two-piece scroll-stopper from UK label, Evans. The fabric is soft and slightly textured, almost lace-like under the light, printed all over with a scattered floral in dusty lavender, peach and soft plum. A ruffled stand collar finishes the neckline on the dress, fastening with a single button at the throat, and the pleating through skirt gives real movement when you walk. The jacket discreet pleating set is set off by the simple soft fabric at the bust to waist. This set will be what you wear to a Sunday lunch and quietly outdress everyone.

Wear the dress alone with the belt cinched and a pair of dove grey boots for something soft and pulled together, or add the jacket over the top for an occasion moment. Try it with amethyst tights and a sage green clutch for a colour story that leans into the print rather than away from it, or ground the whole thing with terracotta accessories if you want warmth against all that lavender. Either way, the collar and the pleats do plenty of the work on their own.

Layers of lavender, violet and grey swirl into a bold abstract floral across this Pine dress, a print with the sweeping, energy that Nordic fashion houses embraced during the 1970s. Cut from a lightweight synthetic knit prized for its drape and colourfastness, the fabric moves easily with the body. Long sleeves taper into buttoned cuffs, while the scoop neckline gathers softly into a contrast piped trim. A defined, elasticated waistband gives way to a full, swinging skirt, finished with a neat centre back zip.

The elasticated waist offers ease through the middle while still marking your shape. Raglan sleeves soften the shoulder line and sit close at the wrist, balancing the fuller skirt below. Wear it loose with boots for daytime ease, or lift it with heels and jewellery for evening. The gathered neckline draws the eye upward and flatters a fuller or more petite bust alike, offering coverage without restriction. A striking, wearable piece of Scandinavian design history.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER: Pine Original Fashion was a Finnish label producing through the 1970s, with a flowing script logo typical of European branding from the era. Its swirling, high contrast florals echo the bold Italian print movement of the decade, filtered through a distinctly Nordic hand. The soft gathering at the neckline reflects the attentive garment making Scandinavian houses were known for at the time.

Silk printed with overscale daisies in deep violet, soft periwinkle, cream and touches of sage green, this dress carries the particular vitality of mid-century textile design. The flowers are not delicate or demure: their petals are rendered with bold, almost graphic brushstroke energy, filling the fabric edge to edge with a print that feels as alive now as it did the day it was made. The construction is classically of its era, a shirt-style bodice with an open notch collar, full-length sleeves with deep turn-back cuffs secured by fabric-covered buttons, and a generous gathered skirt falling to below the knee. The original self-fabric belt, now widened, defines the waist and anchors the whole silhouette.

The gathered skirt creates fullness through the lower body, which means this dress balances beautifully on those who carry more volume through the shoulder and bust, drawing the eye down and outward through the skirt rather than holding it at the top. The belted waist is the pivot: tighten it for a defined hourglass line, or let it sit looser for an easier, more relaxed shape through the middle. Those with a longer torso will appreciate the generous length through the bodice. Wear it as it is, or layer with a simple knit or blazer in cooler months.

Paisley has a history stretching back centuries, from the woven shawls of Kashmir to the Liberty prints of London, and this dress carries that lineage. The cotton is tightly woven and dense with detail: large-scale botanical paisley forms in royal blue, deep purple, forest green and cream sweep across the fabric in the kind of intricate repeat that takes time to fully absorb. Look closer at the close-up shots and the pattern reveals itself in layers, a fine ground of micro-detail beneath the sweeping primary motifs. The bodice is pin-tucked at the front with a button placket opening to a V-neckline, the shoulder seams are cleanly set, and the fitted yoke style drop waist transitions into a pleated midi skirt with soft, fluid movement through the hem.

The pin-tucked front placket draws the eye vertically through the bodice, which is particularly flattering if you want to elongate the upper body or minimise width across the chest and shoulders. The drop waist sits below the natural waist, skimming the torso, and the pleated skirt opens freely from the hip, giving ease and movement without adding visual bulk below. A side zip gives a clean, fitted entry.

The print on this silk bolero is not one you forget quickly. Layered concentric circles in violet, earthy olive, warm brown and pale blush roll across the fabric with the energy of a mid-century abstract canvas. The silk itself is soft and loved, with a fluid drape that moves easily at the three-quarter sleeve and opens cleanly at the centre front. The reverse is a calm, plain blush silk, giving the silhouette a quiet back view. The cropped, boxy cut falls just at or above the natural waist.

Because the hemline sits high and the silhouette is relaxed across the shoulders and chest, this bolero works particularly well layered over higher-waisted skirts or wide-leg trousers, where it draws the eye upward and gives the upper body visual presence. The open front means you control how it frames your neckline and bust. Those who carry volume at the hip will find the cropped length creates a clean horizontal line that lifts the overall proportion. Pair with a simple black column underneath to let the print anchor the whole look.

Woven from a soft lurex blend that shifts between pale lavender and mauvey-silver depending on the light, this floor-length column gown carries mid-century occasion dressing at its most assured. The silhouette is long and unbroken, falling in a clean vertical line from a rounded neckline to the hem. What lifts it decisively from the plain is the asymmetric front panel: a structured fabric tab crosses the bodice diagonally from the left shoulder, secured at its fold by a decorative brooch mount, giving the gown an architectural detail that feels both of its era and genuinely current. The lurex itself has the texture of fine woven cloth rather than costume shimmer, catching light with restraint.

The column cut skims over the body, offering ease through the torso and hips without any structured shaping at the waist. This makes it particularly flattering for those who prefer their evening wear unencumbered: the long vertical line draws the eye from shoulder to floor, while the diagonal panel detail brings visual interest to the upper chest and collarbone without adding width. Pair with strappy heeled sandals and a simple updo to let the gown and its luminous colour do the work.

Produced in Auckland by Russell Brighouse under the Sydney-based Mona Crawford Internationals label, this hostess maxi dress carries the kind of provenance that makes a collector pause. The fabric, a fine Easy Care crepe, holds a soft ivory tone that sets off the hand-applied embroidery with quiet authority. Purple corded thread spirals in continuous loops around the standup collar and again across the entire hem border, punctuated at intervals by raised gold bullion discs, densely coiled and textured like tiny medallions. The silhouette is a clean A-line, sleeveless and unadorned through the body, letting the embroidery do all the talking at the collar and hem. A back zip closes the neck opening with understated precision.

The shift-style cut sits away from the body through the bust and waist, making it genuinely comfortable across a range of proportions. Those with a fuller bust or hip will find the A-line release through the skirt accommodating, while the raised collar adds length to the neck and draws the eye upward. The clean, unworked bodice balances the richness of the embroidery so the overall effect is bold without being busy. Wear it as it was intended, as a statement piece with nothing competing, just simple gold earrings and bare arms.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER: Mona Crawford Internationals of Sydney was a distinguished mid-century fashion house with a reach that extended well beyond its Australian roots. Operating under an international licence model, the label partnered with regional producers to bring its designs to local markets, including a notable Auckland production arrangement with Russell Brighouse, whose name appears on the label of this very dress. Mona Crawford pieces were characterised by confident silhouettes elevated by hand-applied embroidery and decorative surface detail, hallmarks of a label that understood elegance without excess. Surviving pieces produced in collaboration with Russell Brighouse are particularly rare, making this a genuinely collectable artifact of mid-century Australasian fashion history.

Somewhere between a goddess gown and a whisper, this Erica-Loren New York nightgown in the softest wash of lavende is the epitome of the seventies. The silhouette is empire in spirit, with a deep V-front, delicate self-tie bow at the centre bust, and double spaghetti straps that lend the shoulders a bare, unencumbered elegance. The fabric, a soft nylon blend with gentle stretch, moves with an instictive fluid ease. Cut with a sweeping A-line skirt and a low V at the back, this is a piece that lives beautifully in motion.

Worn as eveningwear or styled with strappy sandals and gold jewellery, this gown is quiet glamour. The empire waistline, defined by a gathered elastic band, sits high beneath the bust to lengthen the body from waist to floor. The A-line skirt adds generous volume through the hip and thigh, making it particularly flattering for those who like volume below a defined bust. The deep neckline draws the eye upward, and the bare back adds drama. A denim jacket and long slip underneath takes it effortlessly out of the bedroom and into the world.

There is something quietly commanding about a garment made by naval tailors. Gubb & Mackie, established in 1949 and carrying a reputation built on precision and discipline, brought that same exacting standard to this deep violet cotton velvet pencil skirt. The pile is soft and close, the colour a rich amethyst, and the construction is assured throughout. Wide waistband, angled front seam panels that draw the eye downward, a smooth viscose lining, a centre back zip and a neat back vent at the hem.

The high waistband anchors the silhouette firmly at the natural waist, making it ideal if you want to elongate the lower body and bring focus upward. The tulip shaping through the hip and thigh is close without being restrictive, and the back vent allows easy movement. Try it with a simple silk blouse tucked in, or a fitted knit in cream or black. Heels sharpen the look, but ankle boots work just as well for cooler weather evenings. A piece of New Zealand fashion history that will be a welcome addition to any modern wardrobe.

There is something almost folk-art about this skirt, the way its deep indigo background is alive with tiny teardrops, wheat-shaped leaves, and clusters of hot pink and teal flowers scattered across the fabric in a repeating all-over print that feels both structured and wild at once. The silhouette is fitted at the waist before sweeping into a generous A-line that finishes in two stacked ruffle tiers, each one adding volume and movement at the hem. The easy-care fabric holds its shape well while still allowing the skirt to swing with each step. This is a maxi with real presence.

Tuck in a simple white tee or a fitted teal, yellow or pink knit letting the skirt take the lead. The high fitted waist defines and anchors, making it a strong choice if you prefer emphasis there, while the tiered hem draws the eye downward and adds a sweeping, floor-grazing drama that elongates the leg beautifully. The volume sits below the hip, so the silhouette stays clean through the middle and opens as it falls. Flat sandals keep it relaxed; espadrilles or boots shift it into evening territory easily.

Three distinct prints inhabit a single piece of fabric here, and the effect is striking. Scattered dark florettes dust the shoulders and sleeves, a fine polka dot field anchors the body, and ghostly white paisley scrolls drift across the chest and hem like watermarks in old paper. The fabric itself is lightweight and semi-sheer, with a softness that speaks to easy, fluid movement. The pussy-bow neck tie adds a long, elegant vertical line from collar to waist, and the gathered shoulder seams and slightly elasticated cuffs give the sleeves a gentle blouson volume without weight. This is the kind of blouse that held its own in a boardroom or at a work lunch with equal ease.

The relaxed, untucked cut skims the body without defining it, which makes it especially flattering if you prefer fabric that moves with you rather than against you. The voluminous sleeves and gently gathered back add softness across the shoulder line, while the pussy bow draws the eye upward and keeps the neckline looking polished. Tuck loosely into wide-leg trousers or a high-waisted pencil skirt, or wear open over a slip dress for something a little more current.

Jaeger London, Paris, New York. This 100% wool jacket was made in Great Britain at a time when quality meant: cloth with real weight and recovery, tailoring with proper structure, and a colour so saturated it reads almost like a delicious sweet. The purple here is not soft or muted. It is deep, electric, unapologetic. The boucle-textured wool has a subtle surface interest that shifts slightly in different light, and the single-button front with wide notched lapels and patch pockets sits cleanly without any unnecessary detail getting in the way.

The jacket cuts a straight line from the shoulder through to the hip, sitting away from the body rather than following it, which makes it an easy layer over most things. The wide lapel opens the neckline and draws the eye upward, while the structured shoulder gives good definition without bulk. Patch pockets at the hip are deep and actually useful. Wear it over a simple blouse and trousers, or throw it over a silk dress for an evening. It is sure to outlast almost everything else that isn't vintage in your wardrobe.
